Reel-istic Choices for Musky Fishing!

Monday, September 19th, 2011

We were very proud to announce the development of Bill Craig’s Signature Series Musky Styx. They include the BACKWOODS Warlock Musky Styx and the BACKWOODS Thunder Bolt Musky Styx. These Rods are built on the Rainshadow TCX Hybrid Blanks and rated differently. The Warlock TCX Blank is rated 30-60# or Heavy and the Thunder Bolt TCX Rod Blank is rated 36-80# or Extra Heavy. Both of these Performance Rods are used by members of Muskies Canada and the Ottawa Valley Muskies Club for the past ten years!

Custom Built Rods require “High Profile Reels” to achieve the line capacity and require accurate casts to properly present big baits. It is for these reasons you should consider two very different reels!

As Professional Musky Fishing Guides, both Bill Craig and Daniel Sturges have their preferred choices for Reels to fish Muskies efficiently!

Much of my time searching for trophy Muskies is spent on the Haliburton Highlands, Kawartha Lakes and on many of Muskoka Lakes for Northern Pike as well, so my choice of rods and reels is primarily using the Warlock Musky Series and my go-to reels are Ambassador Series Abu-Garcia Reels or Shimano. When Musky Chasing, I prefer a high line capacity and mid-range gear ratio 6.3:1 or 5.3:1 as the speed of most baits should be swift, with powerful hook sets involved!

Sturges’ top choice is with a Warlock 7’6″ Musky Styx, married with an Abu-Garcia RCN50 Ambassador “Record” with a “Lever” handle. Loaded up with 16/65#Power Pro braided line. This will allow you to optimize on various presentations such as, casting Bucktail Spinners, Jerkbaits and Swim Wizz Jointed Body Baits. During our field product evaluations this combo rated at the very top in overall performance.

Sturges’ second choice in a reel using a Warlock 7’10″ Musky Styx married with a Shimano Tekota 800 Series Reel. This combo is excellent for trolling your big Body Baits and one to 2 ounce Spinnerbaits. During our product evaluation we concluded this combo was the best in the Trolling Classifications!

Craig’s choice of reels requires improved performance in power as he is looking to surpass his World Record Musky on the the St.Lawrence and the Ottawa River where he took his record Musky!

Craig’s choices for performance reels are a Shakespeare High Profile Tide Runner on his 7’10″ Thunder Bolt Musky Styx Trolling  big body baits and his Custom Designed Spinnerbait using size #7 hooks in bright colors to provoke serious strikes. When presenting his secret baits casting to Mammoth Muskies he prefers an ABU-Garcia 6500 Series reel loaded with 100 # Dacron Line to optimize his key Musky Haunts!

This year Abu-Garcia has introduced a Musky Reel suitable for casting and trolling and it has a lever handle with an improved Drag System!

Look for it by name: ABU-Garcia Alphamar

BIO of a Canadian Rod Building Company

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Well folks there is a lot you don’t know about the Owner of BACKWOODS Premium Rods Canada!

I started fishing when I was about five years old concentrating on a local river and found my passion for this sport grew rapidly.

Faced with many life and death traumas throughout my career job for 30 years as a Professional Firefighter & Inspector. I would use my fishing interests as a simple means of release.

Almost all my leisure  time was  spent wisely travelling to the various Lakes in Muskoka, Kawarthas, Haliburton Highland area as well as Lake Ontario and tributary rivers and streams  to fuel my progress as an up and coming Multi-Species Angler.

Previous to my Career job I was a Supervisor of a  Big Box retail clothing chain working out of various popular malls in the GTA as well as being responsible  for over a dozen Grand Openings in Peterboro, Chatham, Richmond Hill, St. Catherines, and Levy, Quebec, Montreal, Laval for ten years. This is where my sales ability and people skills escalated.

I spent several years as a Angling Specialist/Sales Consultant with many of the top fishing Lure and Rod Companies at The Toronto Spring Fishing & Boat Show and The Toronto Sportsmen Show.

Realizing how carelessly generic offshore fishing rods were built, I crossed paths with several Master Rod Builders who were looking to increase their sales volumes. Two of the Rod builder’s formerly

My first interests were focused on Designing  Steelhead Stream, Float and Fly Rods! The  company name was The Steelhead Pro Shop. Business was never ending and as time passed we were getting more and more request to build  Specialty Rods for Bass, Walleye and Musky.

After surpassing our projected sales figures we started having our rods we felt it was time to go for the label of Top Rod Producer. To achieve this we had to come up with our own brand name of rods an include fishing rods for every specie.

I was up in the Haliburton Highlands area in early spring,  knee deep in a beautiful pristine stream in pursuit of some Brook Trout . This particular steam was deep in the BACKWOODS.  Field Testing a newly designed Species Specific Spinning Rod and just as I lit my Backwoods cigar a light came on as to a great name for our rods! So from that day (1996) on we were called BACKWOODS Premium Rods!

From 1980 I began promoting a Professional Fishing Guide Service and in between clients, I  tried my hand as a Professional Bass Competitor 1986 to 1994 I tried my hand as a Tournament Bass Pro. Winning First Place on my initial attempt! Beating some of Ontario’s Top Tournament Competitors! Since that day we have had numerous endorsements by Canadian Professional Anglers.

First we consulted my good friend Gerry Pigeon (B.A.S.S Master Angler) and he eventually bought into the company and became the Vice President. He is from Ottawa, Ontario. Then Walleye Tournament Angler James E. Turner our Marketing Manager stepped up to provide us with expertise as an avid Saskatchewan Walleye Trail Competitor with his experience,

Shortly after that we brought Bill Craig (Mr.Muskie) on as our Musky Expert/Adviser who is the current holder of the World Record Live Release Musky. Craig is  also from the Ottawa area.

Our Steelhead Specialist is also our primary Master Rod Builder Ernie Jantzen. Jantzen is the Co-designer of Jantzen Maxx Bass, Walleye, Float and Fly Rods. Responsible for supplying all of our Burlwood Custom Reel Seats, Accents and Butt Cap Designs.

Just recently we have brought Professional Fly Fishing Instructor/ Fine Art Artist, Richard Vandemeer onboard as our Fly Fishing Rod consultant. Sporting our Jantzen Fly Rod Designs throughout Ontario.

Innovative Rod & Reel Field Testing!

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

As mentioned before, I’m one of  the fussiest Fishing Tackle Customer on earth!

This year BACKWOODS Premium Rods has introduced eight (8) New Tournament Signature Series Fishing Rods! Along with another eight (12) Jantzen Maxx Technique & Species Specific Rods that are, Beyond Compare!

We had all Pfluegers President’s Spinning Reels on all three Rods and Gold Series on other two had the New Pflueger Patriarch Spinning reels on them!

Once these rods are designed our next step is to Field Test and Evaluate their overall performances using close to perfectly matched New Reels to ensure Optimum Performance is achieved.

Mark Matheson and I went on a Fishing trip to the Haliburton Highland area in

pursuit of  Walleye, Bass and Musky.

We fished the entire weekend in less then ideal conditions!

We managed to hook into a fair amount Bass and a modest amount of Walleye and one big Muskie!

Both of us were using BACKWOODS TCX Hybrids and two CFX Jantzen Maxx  Spinning Rods.

Day two however we shared a BACKWOODS Bull Dawg Casting Styx using a XS1000 Ardent Reel!

What an experience!!!

The overall results were favorable in every aspect of fishing with High Performance Rods!

Wishing you were Fishin with a BACKWOODS Jantzen Maxx Rod
